Courage at Lucknow, Triptych 0524 by Lesley Luce explores Canada’s evolving identity through the imagery and symbolism of its postage stamps. Presented as a triptych, the work assembles a visual archive of how Canada has represented itself across generations. The title is drawn from a fragment of the William Hall, V.C. stamp, issued in 2010 to commemorate the first Black person and first Nova Scotian to receive the Victoria Cross. From a distance, the composition appears as a bold geometric pattern. Up close, its intricate details reveal layers of symbols and references, from early pre-Confederation stamps to images of service, recognition, and national identity, forming a portrait of the stories that define courage and remembrance in Canada.
