They Didn’t Get Married After All, Composition 1118 by Lesley Luce explores Canadian literature through imagery, memory, and cultural reference. Drawing on fragments from book covers, pages, and graphic elements, the work assembles a visual archive of stories that have shaped how we read, imagine, and understand ourselves.
From a distance, the composition appears as a bold geometric pattern. Up close, its intricate details reveal layers of symbols and references, from novels and poetry to children’s books and literary criticism, forming a portrait of Canada’s literary landscape across generations.
The title is drawn from the final line of The Paper Bag Princess, set in deliberate contrast to the central image inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale, holding space between independence, expectation, and the stories we are told about how things are supposed to end.
