Soldiers of the Soil, Composition 0305 by Lesley Luce explores Canada’s evolving identity through the imagery and symbolism of its postage stamps. The work assembles a visual archive of how Canada has represented itself across generations, with the title inspired by the Farmerettes, the young women who worked on Canadian farms during the Second World War. From a distance, the composition appears as a bold geometric pattern. Up close, its intricate details reveal layers of symbols and references, from early pre-Confederation stamps to images of land, labour, and national identity, bringing together the stories Canada has used to define itself over time.
